Bloodlines
Years ago I bought Dee, a daughter of FC AFC River Oaks Way-Da-Go Rocky. She had many of the traits I was looking for – talented field dog, sweet disposition, nice bone and structure with a beautiful old-fashioned head (not short and heavy nor long and slender, but Goldilocks perfect). Although she wasn’t a chocolate Lab, she did carry the chocolate gene.
Dee bred to Chip gave me two of my heart dogs, Tory and Arwen. They were talented and quick to learn and yet great family dogs.
That bloodline continues in several of my dogs.
Doppelganger*
A few years ago I saw a photo of a dog on Facebook. This was Tyra, a chocolate Lab that looked so much like Arwen I had to find her pedigree. It turns out Arwen and Tyra were both granddaughters of Rocky. They were born and died within weeks of each other. Tyra’s owner posted photos of her that were so similar to the photos I took of Arwen that it was eerie.
* A remarkably similar double.

Tyra (Owned by Deb Leibbrandt)
With a bit of searching, I found one of Tyra’s sons, Bleu. His father was also a Rocky grandson.
Rocky did well in his field trial career, but he’s probably best known for producing dogs that could be handled by amateurs. Yes, his pups were focused and talented in the field, but they could also play gently with children.
This is very a talented bloodline. Bleu’s full sister, Ammo , was amateur-trained and handled. She won her field championship and amateur field championship in both the US and Canada, then went on to win the Canadian National Amateur Championship. That’s after winning the National Derby Championship. She also won four double-headers in one year. (A double-header is when a dog wins both the Open and the Amateur stake on the same weekend. It happens on occasion, but no other dog has done it four times in one year.)
Heir to the throne
Boo is a chocolate Lab and looks a lot like Bleu with a hint of the show blood from his mother. He has the sweet disposition that comes from Rocky. He’s also a fast learner.

The first puppy retrieve! He was so proud of himself.
Although he’d seen splash water before, this was his introduction to swimming water in a big pond.
Who could tell a dog with such a sweet face that he’s not supposed to be on the couch?
He’s so handsome he should audition as Johnny Depp’s stand-in.
